AI DBT App and Chat: What an AI Can (and Cannot) Do for DBT Skills Practice
By Timo, founder and developer of DBT-Mind
Quick answer
An AI DBT app uses a chat to help you pick and practice DBT skills between therapy sessions. It can walk you through STOP or TIPP when emotions run high, help you script a DEAR MAN request and remind you of skills you already know. It is not therapy and not crisis care. A good AI DBT chat says so, points you to a crisis line such as 988 (US) when you mention suicide or self-harm, and sends you back to real skills practice.
General information about DBT skills. It does not replace therapy, and in an emergency contact your local emergency number or crisis line.
More and more people type their worst moments into a chat window. For DBT, that can be useful: the skills are concrete, and a chat can help you find the right one when your mind is too loud to remember it. It can also go wrong, because a chatbot sounds confident whether it is right or not, and it cannot call for help.
This guide is written by the team behind DBT-Mind, which has an AI crisis chat as a Premium feature. We explain what we built, where its limits are, and where other apps or a human are the better choice.
What an AI DBT chat can help with
Picking a skill in the moment
You describe what is happening and get one or two skills that fit, for example the TIPP skill when your body is flooded or STOP when you are about to send a message you will regret.
Walking through the steps
When you know the name of a skill but not the steps, a chat can go through them with you one at a time, while you do them.
Rehearsing a hard conversation
You can draft a DEAR MAN request with the chat, read it back and change it before you say it to the real person.
Separating facts from interpretation
A chat can ask the questions of Check the Facts: what actually happened, what you are assuming, and whether the emotion fits the facts.
The gap between sessions
It answers at any hour. For people in weekly therapy, that gap is often when skills are hardest to use.
What an AI chat cannot do
It is not therapy
It does not know your history the way a therapist does, it cannot build a treatment plan, and it cannot diagnose anything.
It is not crisis care
The American Psychological Association warned in November 2025 that the ability of AI chatbots to guide someone through a crisis is limited and unpredictable. A chat cannot check on you or send help.
It can be wrong
AI models can state wrong things in a calm, sure tone. If an answer contradicts your skills handouts or your therapist, trust them.
It does not do the skill for you
Reading a suggestion is not practice. The skill only works when you put the phone down and do it: the cold water, the paced breathing, the conversation.
It should not replace people
The same APA advisory recommends guarding against unhealthy dependence on these tools. Use the chat as a bridge to the people in your life, not instead of them.
If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, stop chatting and call 988 (US), 112 (EU) or your local crisis line.
What the research says so far
The evidence is early. One DBT-specific study is Pocket Skills, a conversational mobile web app built with Marsha Linehan, who developed DBT (Schroeder et al., CHI 2018). In a 4-week field study with 73 people who were already in psychotherapy, participants reported less depression and anxiety and more DBT skills use. It was a small feasibility study with self-reported results, and its scripted conversational agent was built before today’s generative AI chatbots.
For generative AI, the American Psychological Association’s health advisory (November 2025) concludes that even well-built tools do not yet have enough evidence to show they are effective or safe in mental health care, and that most chatbots and wellness apps were not designed to provide clinical treatment. It asks that chatbots never pose as licensed professionals.
In short: an AI chat is a reasonable way to rehearse skills you are learning, and an unproven way to treat anything. If you are new to DBT, the DBT skills list is a better first step than a chat.
What to check before you use an AI DBT chat
| Question | Why it matters | DBT-Mind |
|---|---|---|
| Does it say it is not a therapist? | Sets honest expectations. The APA asks that chatbots never pose as licensed professionals. | Yes. The first message says it is not a real therapist or medical professional. |
| What happens if you mention suicide or self-harm? | A chat should move you toward human help right away. | Messages with words such as "suicide" or "want to die" do not go to the AI. The app answers with 988, the 741741 Crisis Text Line and emergency services, and offers a Call 988 button. |
| Does it suggest real DBT skills? | Generic advice is not DBT. Named skills can be checked and practiced. | It suggests one or two skills, such as TIPP, STOP, DEAR MAN or opposite action, and a recommended skill opens in the app with Start now. |
| What does it cost? | Many AI features sit behind a subscription. | The AI crisis chat is Premium ($8.99 per month or $54.99 per year). The skills library and crisis tools are free. |
| Where do your messages go? | Your text is processed by an AI service outside your phone. | Read the privacy policy before you write anything sensitive. |

How to use an AI chat for DBT practice
- 1
Start with the situation. Write what happened, the emotion and how strong it is (0 to 10), and what you feel the urge to do.
- 2
Ask for one skill, then do it. Put the phone down while you do it, and come back afterwards if you need the next step.
- 3
Rehearse out loud. If the chat helped you write a DEAR MAN script, say it once before the real conversation.
- 4
Write down what helped in your diary card or journal, so the chat is not the only place your progress lives.
- 5
Bring it to therapy. Tell your therapist which suggestions you used and which did not fit; they can correct course.
AI chat or another kind of DBT app?
An AI chat is one feature, not a whole app. Several DBT apps include one: DBT-Mind has its AI crisis chat, and the listings of DBT Coach and DBT Pal both mention an AI coach. If you want the largest content library or the app with the most ratings, DBT Coach is the stronger choice; if you want the quickest diary card with entries stored on your phone, look at DBT Pal. The best DBT apps comparison has prices and features side by side.
If you practice DBT without a therapist, read how to do DBT on your own first. An AI chat fits into that routine as a helper, not as the plan.
Best for
Finding a skill when you are stuck, rehearsing conversations and getting through the hours between therapy sessions.
Limits
Not therapy, not crisis care, and it can be wrong. Evidence for generative AI in mental health is still thin.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there an AI for DBT?
- Yes. Several DBT apps include an AI chat: DBT-Mind has an AI crisis chat (Premium), and DBT Coach and DBT Pal list an AI coach in their store listings. A research app called Pocket Skills tested a conversational DBT coach in 2018. None of them replaces DBT with a therapist.
- Can ChatGPT teach DBT skills?
- A general chatbot can explain DBT skills, but it is not built for DBT or for crisis situations. The APA’s 2025 health advisory notes that most such tools were not designed to provide treatment and often lack adequate safety protocols. If you use one, check its answers against a skills handout or your therapist.
- Is the DBT-Mind AI chat free?
- No. The AI crisis chat is part of DBT-Mind Premium ($8.99 per month or $54.99 per year on the US App Store, October 2026). The skills library, crisis tools and SOS cards are free.
- Can an AI DBT chat help in a crisis?
- It can remind you of skills such as TIPP or STOP, but it cannot keep you safe or send help. If you are in danger or thinking about suicide, call 988 (US), 112 (EU) or your local crisis line, or contact emergency services.
- Does an AI DBT app replace a therapist?
- No. Full DBT includes individual therapy, a skills group, phone coaching and a therapist team. An AI chat can support skills practice between sessions or while you wait for therapy, nothing more.
